Band FAQs
Not sure if Band is right for you? Here are answers to some common questions to help you make the decision!
- Is Band expensive?
- Instruments, reeds, and other required materials can add up, but we work very hard to make Band affordable for all students. If you're worried about costs, contact Mr. Sharp or Ms. Lovins so we can fit Band into your budget.
- Is Band hard?
- Sometimes, but only because you are learning something brand new. With consistent practice, playing your instrument will feel as natural as riding your bike or brushing your teeth!
- Is Band fun?
- Yes! Plus it's highly rewarding! It may not always be easy, and you will get frustrated sometimes, but once you can finally play what you've been working so hard at, it's an absolute blast! Plus, once you've been playing for a little while, you can learn your favorite songs on your instrument and perform them for your friends!
- Will I have to practice for hours and hours every day?
- No...but you would be really good if you did! We ask that you practice at least 4 times a week for at least 15 minutes, but once you start practicing, it's easy to play for much longer! Just like when learning anything new, the more often you do it, the faster you will learn it. We would love if everyone practiced for hours and hours each day, but understand it's just not realistic and not everyone is going to be the next Yo-Yo Ma.
- What instrument should I play?
- The instrument that you want to play most, as long as we know the instrument will work well with you. Sometimes certain instruments don't work well with a student's jaw structure or teeth, making it not impossible, but very tough to play a certain instrument. Most students get to play the instrument they want to!
- I have braces. Can I still be in band?
- Definitely! For some instruments, braces don't even get in the way! For other instruments, it takes a little adjusting when the braces are put on or taken off, and you might need a day or two away from playing when they get tightened, but it's totally doable. Tons of students in band get braces when he in middle school, and had they still succeed in playing their instruments!
- What if I don't know what instrument I want to play?
- Contact Mr. Sharp or Ms. Lovins and they will set up a time with you to try out as many of the instruments as you'd like to help you decide!
- How do I get an instrument?
- Follow the instructions on the right for information on renting an instrument. If you cannot afford an instrument, contact Mr. Sharp or Ms. Lovins to see what school owned instruments are available. We cannot promise that you will get your first choice when using a school owned instrument, but we can promise that you will get a quality instrument to play.
- Are there a ton of after school rehearsals and concerts?
- Nope! Beginning Band students only perform in two after school concerts and no after school rehearsals.
- Can I play sports and be in Band?
- Definitely! Many Band students also participate in sports, and rarely, especially in Beginning Band, do they conflict. When they do, the Band Directors and coaches work very well together to solve any scheduling conflicts. Plus, you're learning the same things in Band as you are playing sports! Team work, persistence, leadership skills, and more! All things that will make you both a better Band student and athlete! Win-Win!
- Will I still get gym, art, Spanish, or computers?
- Yes! Beginning Band students go through the same rotations as non-Band students.
- Should I join Band?
- Yes! Give it a try! You never know until you try it! Plus, there's nothing wrong with trying it for a year and deciding it just isn't for you.
